From offshore rigs to search engine optimization.
I went to Nashville Auto Diesel College for collision repair, painted cars for four years, then spent four more years as a derrickhand on offshore barge drilling rigs running the Louisiana coast. When the rigs laid me off, I bought a table saw off Craigslist and started building furniture. I worked at a gyro spot. Did wheel repair. Estimated at Capitol Body Shop. I did whatever it took.
SEO started by accident. A friend was making YouTube videos with barely 100 views each. I googled "how do I make YouTube videos show to more people" and found a guy my age talking about search engine optimization. It was 2am. I bought his course on the spot.
By 5pm I was ready. I treated that rudimentary online course like a lecture at Dartmouth.
The next day on my lunch break, I stopped at Walgreens for a notebook and pens. Every word, every exercise, written down by hand. My friend's channel went from 80 subscribers to 20,000. From barely 100 views to tens of thousands.
That was the start. I began building dozens of websites, ranking them on Google, and putting call tracking numbers on them. When the calls came in, I connected them with local contractors. Eventually those contractors started asking where all the leads were coming from. That is how the business model was born.
